Semaglutide

FDA Approved Peptide for Weight Loss

What is semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a glycogen like peptide (GLP) that improves glycemic control. It was approved by the FDA in 2017 for weight loss and gained popularity in 2021 under the name Wegovy. Its success and subsequent news coverage on mainstream and social media led to a national shortage of the medication in November. We are pleased to have it in stock at NU Start and have begun utilizing it for our patients.

How does semaglutide work to help reduce body weight?
Semaglutide lowers blood sugar levels by helping the pancreas release the right amount of insulin when blood sugar levels are high, which moves sugar from the blood into other body tissues where it is used for energy. Semaglutide injection also works by slowing the movement of food through the stomach and in most people decreases appetite and causes weight loss.

How will I use semaglutide?
Patients will receive one injection per week at NU Start for 4 consecutive weeks for the first month. Weekly appointments with an RN/Nutrition Consultant will be required during the first month. The length of semaglutide treatment will be determined in consultation by you and our medical staff.

What should I expect from my weekly appointment at NU Start?
Scheduled 15 minute appointments with an RN at Nustart will include directions for administration of the semaglutide, recommendations for diet and exercise, and instructions for management of possible side effects and adverse reactions. Vitamin B12 injections are included weekly in the first month and once a month thereafter. Body composition measurement is included at the beginning and end of treatment.

What is the cost of semaglutide treatment?
New patient cost is $425 and includes an InBody
Existing patients who have an InBody will be $400 for the first month of treatment. Continuous treatment $350 - $375 per month (depending on number of visits/support needed)

Weight loss expectations average 10-15% in 9 months.
